The Frivolity of Evil.
In his article “The Frivolity of Evil” Theodore Dalrymple analyses the state of evil in
the society. In the article, he develops his argument about the continued state of the evil acts
in the society. According to him, we human beings set the stage for the different kinds of
evils to happen in society. He gives different scenarios where the actions of human beings
have allowed evils and atrocities to happen. For the case of the woman who had depression,
her mother set up the stage for the woman to undergo what she went through. Theodore
blames the woman’s mother for not teaching and guiding her towards getting a good man to
settle down with. Furthermore, the woman’s mother subjected her to vulnerability when she
started dating a man younger than her and the man would not get in terms with the daughter.
The leader of Equatorial Guinea by the time Theodore was touring the country was a
nephew to the previous dictator who had killed many people in the country. The country
dictator had to continue with the atrocities that his uncle was committing since he knew that
was the best way to rule the country. To rule by force through torturing and killing people is
what the current dictator of Equatorial Guinea knew since that is how he was raised to be a
leader; a leader who would continue committing the evils that he had been taught by his
uncle.
Also, the personal life that people live may create a stage where people commit
crimes in the society. The woman who had taken an overdose of her antidepressants had lived
a life that led her into depression. She had three children with different men who chased her
away after every childbirth. Apparently, if she had taken her time to chose the best man for
herself she would not reach a point of taking an overdose which could have killed her.
According to Theodore, people are unhappy because they chose to live in ways that
bring them unhappiness. They don’t bot have the correct virtues that would instead bring
them the happiness they crave for when they say they are depressed instead of saying that
